What is Stream of Conciousness?

The stream of consciousness is a metaphor describing how thoughts seem to flow through the conscious mind. Research studies have shown that we only experience one mental event at a time as a fast-moving mind stream. William James, often considered to be the father of American psychology, first coined the phrase "stream of consciousness". The full range of thoughts—that one can be aware of—can form the content of this stream.

...in Literature?

You will find lots of references to stream of consciouness in literature and this is about allowing a character to express their inner thoughts. Often this is lucid and controlled, but there are some examples, eg in Waiting for Godot, where extended pieces of SOC begin to become strange - seemingly sensible but ultimately 'Absurd'.

It can however give us a window into their minds and their motivations.

Writing your thoughts down without finding something to say is thought by many to be a way to tap into what you are really thinking... the idea being that we often push down our real thoughts and create a false narrative over the top.

This by the way is generally harmless as a way to journal... it can however, like meditation, unlock things we do not want to remember so a) only do it if you want to and b) make sure you talk to someone if something makes you upset...
