ATL: Creative Thinking:  Create original works and ideas; use existing works and ideas in new ways

We get attached to things. Even in a world where we have so much and in which we can change our mobile phone twice a year and still be looking for the new one... we find there are things we get attached to.  Often they can end up being more valuable than the object themselves- irreplaceable.  The feel of them, the look of them, the smell of them...

Consider: What do you have that is irreplaceable?

Other objects may just mean something by what they 'signify'? They may remind us of happy times, of people who have passed, of a first love...  These then are attached to memories which have their own sounds, smells, tastes... These can be a trigger for other thoughts and issues... dealing with leaving apart, dealing with loss, the importance of a relationship, or maybe even a negative - not growing up...

Consider: How might you unlock these feelings and/or thoughts?

Finally, ordinary objects of no personal value can speak about us in ways we did not realise. If we only know what questions to ask. A worn sneaker that we still have not thrown away becomes symbolic of us holding on to an old fashion. A chipped coffee mug that we use every morning talks of a ritual that has gone beyond a behaviour to being a central part of who we are. I think of my mother and I think of a radiator =on which she perched every day listening to the radio - it was there that I first heard about the Hillsborough disaster. Or the small bottle of Chanel 5 that she only wore on very special occasions...

Stimulus

Guidelines

Take a picture of an object

5mins Stream of Consciousness to stimulate thought

Ask it questions:

  • Why did I pick you?

  • What might you mean?

  • Use the five senses...

  • Give it personality - use verbs, use adverbs...

Extension: What is a short story?

As you think about writing a story you may want to be aware of the 'five' elements. Which do you think might be the most important?
