Aim: To consider what types of questions we ask of a text

So when we pick up a book we already are judging it.. How do we judge it?

  • The Blurb?

  • The Size?

  • The Picture?

  • The context?

  • Publisher/Awards....

Task: Choose one of these book covers and write a short spiel about what you think this story may be about. Try to consider the elements of what you are looking at.

Literature Tips: Do not enjoy reading?

I have come across a lot of people who profess not to like reading - many get into reading later in life. I get it. 'A teacher says we should like it' but we don't, besides 'all the good books get turned into films anyway' so why waste the time.

Well maybe it is not as simple as that: Books offer a range of experiences, some of which you may enjoy... if you were to give it a chance.

The real question is 'do you'?

Consider: would you like even the best film if you were only allowed to watch two minutes at time?

course not! However this is what a lot of people who 'do not like reading' do.

I encourage you to invest in at least the first chapter. Read in chunks and, of course, look at how long it will take to read!

Books should be read in chunks - read chapters together. I would also do the maths...

Look at how long you want to be reading this books and then calculate how many chapters or pages you should read on average a night... Now we have a task we can manage and you will one day find you do an awful lot more... I spent a lot of my holiday reading through the night as I could not put the book down!
