ATL: Read critically and for comprehension
Remember characters are not real! This means that every aspect of the character is created for a purpose. By asking questions about the character we can pick apart a character but also appreciate how the author is presenting the story. To read critically means we need to understand more than just the stoyline. We need to begin to pick apart the novel and to do that we have a range of tools. Today we are looking at character.
LO: How do we see connections?

The 5 elements of characterization can be explained with the acronym S.T.E.A.L.
SPEAK = what (dialogue) and how (speaker tags & tone) a character speaks to other characters.
THOUGHTS = What a character thinks, believes, values, and what motivates a character.
EFFECTS on OTHERS = The relationships the character has with others and how characters treat each other.
ACTIONS = How a character behaves, including how they react to people & events.
LOOKS = A character’s physical appearance. This includes physical features, clothing, body language, etc.
If a person says one thing and does another - on what do we judge them? Does this work for both positive and negative?

Task
Task: Choose any character from the Outsiders. YOU need to create a poster for that character. Remember to give page references and/or quotes. Do not google a picture of them as this will be a picture from the film and not from your inference. You may use a picture you think gives an idea of what you see or you may draw your idea.
Timing: This is a quick, one lesson assignment so work hard and work quickly!
Homework: Complete for homework.
When you have finished screenshot your work into your Learner Portfolio, if you did not do it in there. If you wish you can make this a link into the actual document.
Extension: Is this true beyond fiction?
We are often taught not to judge a person on their looks... however the novel does ask us to do that as how the person looks is created- it is a tool to communicate the bigger picture. They were not born with those cold, ice eyes - the writer intentionally gave them!
But we do choose the way we dress. Does this relate?
